Where Does Capriccio’s Pizza Rank in Richmond?
Written by Matt Sadler on May 19, 2009 – 8:32 am -I can’t get RVAFoodie to shut up about this place. “Capriccio” this and “Capriccio” that. I love me some good pizza but I am in ignorant bliss living blocks away from Arianna’s and Mary Angela’s. So for me to go out to the west end for NY Style pizza seems a little over the top.
Yesterday the perfect storm hit and I was in the West End and we were in need of dinner and Little Marinara wanted pepperoni pizza (never mind that he always wants pepperoni pizza) so we ended up at Capriccio’s.
And……. It was good….. really good.
Let me be upfront, this is nothing close to the stuff I have had in Brooklyn. But it was very yummy.
- The crust was light and crunchy. Perfectly browned.
- The cheese was extravagant. Way too much.
- The sauce was the perfect complement.
Was it better than Mary Angela’s? I am not ready to go there. I definitely don’t think it is a 20 minute drive better.
I was a little disappointed in the topping selection. It was very standard fare. Little or no creativity, but does it matter when the product is so good?
Mrs. Marinara wanted me to mention that they served crushed ice with their fountain drinks and that should be noted a plus.
So, have you been? Is it better than the other Richmond stalwarts?

I like that capriccio’s has thin crust pizza but will reserve judgement until another visit. Uh…don’t like Mary Angelas..so we’re weird that way…

So veron- you don’t like Edo’s. You don’t like Mary Angela’s pizza. Hmmmm.
Yes, you are weird that way

best pizza in richmond =8 and 1/2. get on it.

Lol- 8 1/2 is good but is Mamma Zu better.
My only complaint is that it is a different type of pizza. We aren’t comparing apples to apples. I would argue that I like both styles equally.

I like Tony’s ristorante’s pizza (west end). His does not have the very thin crust of cappricio’s though.
Oh and I love his lasagna…talk about lotsa meat in the sauce….

And I am not an authority on Italian food (the hubby is since he has worked in different Italian restaurants)…where I come from there is spaghetti and fried chicken in our McDonalds so my taste buds need adjusting…:)

WMDM — you gotta admit, that tastebuds pizza this weekend was TAS-TEE!

Okay I have a confession, you all may laugh but the pizza I really miss is from that pizza place that used to be in Regency Shopping center called Pizzeria Regina…I think they originated from the Boston North end. I was happy just eating their cheese pizza because their aged cheese was soo good! So sad when they closed….:(

Went to Capriccio’s for lunch today. Had my first pizza margerita. Really nice, crispy basily and saucey. Right now, Capriccio’s is my favorite crust (so thin and crispy). Taranatino’s is my favorite sauce. Ariana’s has my favorite pie/toppings (the eggplant parm). Mary Angela’s has my favorite dough for purchase when I’m too lazy to make my own.
At Caps, go there and get a plain cheese slice and see if you can resist ordering another. The whole pie is another experience altogether.

I love Mary’s but my favorite, favorite, is this little place in chesterfield, Pino’s. So good. Can’t even tell you.

I miss Regina’s a LOT. The crust was so good on that pizza. Sbarro’s sucks! But I go to Capriccios about twice a week for lunch. The mini margherita is excellent.

crushed ice is da bomb. where else in richmond serves it?
i’m thinking of trying to BUY some for my next summer party.
in my family we call it “the good ice.”
also 8 1/2 is authentic italian (naples-style) pizza. i heart it.

8 1/2 rocks no doubt although if I had my druthers, i would rather get my pizza from Mamma Zu- only because they make bigger pies. Same recipe- bigger slices.

IMO the best two pizzas in the area come from two underrated places….Mediterraneo in Midlothian and Italian Kitchen West in the near West End.

I am starting to wonder where Tarrantinos fits in the rankings. I love their spicy sauce. I love the slightly charred crust. If it wasn’t sucha a pain for pick up i would order their more often.
