Thanksgiving Question for RVA Foodies

Written by Matt Sadler on November 10, 2008 – 12:04 pm -

This is the first year that I will actually be cooking a Thanksgiving Dinner. As such, I want to buy a decent turkey. So my question is:

Where will you be buying your turkey this year?

  1. RVA Foodie Says:

Are we limited to discussing turkey as the main course? I’m NOT asking as the frequently maligned vegetarian party-pooper. I’m just asking because a really good thanksgiving meal is often highlighted by non-pilgrim tradition dishes. Personally, I’m contemplating a whole fish of some sort (meanwhile, my in-laws will demand spiral cut ham).

  2. Bookstore Piet Says:

We will getting a smoked turkey and a spiral cut ham from our good friend Tanya at Belmont Butchery.

I am stuck on turkey. As it is, I am screwing up too many people’s traditional idea of Thanksgiving.

My initial thoughts on purchasing location(s) are Belmont Butchery, Fresh Market, and Whole Foods.

I am curious to know if anybody has any opinions about these choices. Also it would be cool to see if there are any farms still selling their birds.

  4. Jeanne Says:

Do you have a good farmer’s market? I would think that closer to the holidays you would have someone there who is selling fresh turkeys, or at least getting you on a list so they can butcher you one. Just a thought!

  5. Dogburt Says:

Sometimes, you have to let the turkey choose YOU.

At least that’s what farmer Bob told us as he was pulling out his hatchet.
